Activities

As Shiel is based right in the heart of Scotland, you are very well placed for exploring.  Everything from castles, lochs, golf, fishing, walks, safari and even theatre are in easy reach and the popular to visit towns of Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews are all less than an hour away.

Stirling Castle

Shiel is very well located to explore the decedent world of Scottish royalty at Stirling Castle. Tour the Renaissance Royal Palace, the Great Hall and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Museum, and learn the castle’s rich history including the coronation of the infant Queen Mary and famous battles like the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

Fishing in Loch Leven

Organised through The Green Hotel in Kinross, you can experience fly fishing in Scotland with a difference. Only Loch Leven has its very own strain of brown trout – salmo levenensis. Although this renowned fish has been introduced to waters across the world, it interbreeds freely with native trout and its uniqueness is lost. So if you want to catch the genuine article, you have to visit Loch Leven which remains one of the world’s most famous brown trout fisheries.

It hosts no less than seven courses on the coast including the famous ‘Old Course’. An incredible place to play for the experienced golfer.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre

The theatre is unusually located in a small town in pretty much the middle of Scotland, the quality of the shows has drawn a crowd from all over the country, people drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Worth checking what’s on before you stay at Shiel and if something takes your fancy, we would suggest you book tickets in advance, especially in the summer. There are dining options in the theatre and in nearby, again we would suggest you book.
